SoftSurroundings Order – Paul & Joe Beaute

Hi guys! We resume regularly scheduled posting here at Strawberry Mochi today – at least for today anyway. I’m a little swamped with studying/lab/midterms/interviews in the next two weeks so I may be a bit scarce… but I did just edit about 15 posts worth of pictures today! I think there will be a lot of reviews coming up until I can figure out my skin. As many of you know, I’ve been struggling with an annoying amount of cystic acne since the early part of last quarter (most likely hormonal due to stress and lack of sleep since I haven’t really changed anything) and I unfortunately missed 3 birth control pills in the last two weeks so… yea. It’s not pretty. =/ I did go out and buy two Mario Badescu products and a Murad medicated concealer last week and they seem to be working pretty well but unfortunately I have some pretty stubborn blighters and I don’t even know what I’m going to do about the scarring yet. =/

Anyway – onto prettier things, I got my Soft Surroundings order last Tuesday! This was the mini haul I made in celebration of finishing all my grad school applications a couple weeks ago. Happily, I also received my first graduate school acceptance – to UC Davis’s Biomedical Engineering Program. It’s not exactly my top choice, but it’s comforting to know that I have somewhere to go next year LOL. Soft Surroundings was having an uber sale on Paul & Joe Beaute, as well as Becca and some other brands. I got a blush and a lipstick (I believe $10 and $8 respectively?). They normally retail for $25 and $20 so I was really happy.

Unfortunately I was not very pleased with Soft Surroundings or UPS. First, I received my order in nothing but a plastic bubble mailer. Yea, everything was just thrown in, and the mailer was sealed normally, not even wrapped tightly around the items. I’m a little amazed that the blush survived intact, but thankfully it did. Still, shoddy, shoddy packaging. Second, the lipstick arrived with prints on both sides, as if someone had gently touched it. I opted to keep it since the one I bought went out of stock, but still, how is this acceptable? I contacted CS about it and they offered me either $2 off or $3 off my next order. UPS really frustrated me too. It took them considerably longer to ship the packages than I would have expected and the first day, they had it out for delivery from Anaheim, which is about two hours away from San Diego. THEN, when the driver couldn’t make the whole route, my package went BACK to Anaheim, then to San Diego, then to me. It was also just thrown outside my door where SO found it. T_T;

ANYWAY – now truly onto prettier things. I ordered the powder blush #10 Tango, and the lipstick #14 Strawberry Jam. They’re both gorgeous. The blush is actually considerably more pigmented than I expected it to be (I don’t know why I thought it wouldn’t be), certainly not on par with NARS or Shu Uemura’s Pastel Fluos (coming up) but more pigmented than my Laura Mercier blushes. I… actually kind of find it an awkward pigmentation to work with because one layer is not quite enough but two is too much. Actually one is probably just fine, but for some reason I like doing two layers. I think I’ll try using it with my EcoTools mineral blush brush. The lipstick is lovely too! Paul & Joe lipsticks are notorious for being very weakly pigmented, but I was actually pleased with this one. It certainly is sheer, but two layers gives a beautiful just-kissed kind of look. Very pretty and wearable. It’s quite glossy with shimmers (so… don’t overapply because shimmer overload is not that pretty) and the texture is like a cushy lip balm, which I love. Swatches below.

Paul & Joe Beaute Powder Blush #10 Tango Paul & Joe Beaute Lipstick N #14 Strawberry Jam

I will probably be posting my FOTD with both these products tomorrow and I do love both of them… but I doubt I’ll be wearing the blush much at least for now. Unfortunately I typically don’t feel like wearing reddish/pink blush when I’m broken out because it really brings out my blemishes and scars. =/ If anyone has recommendations for products that can deal with acne scars, please do let me know! I’ve used both the Ole Henricksen Truth Serum (sort of stopped working after a week??) and The Body Shop’s Vitamin C Overnight Treatment (it was great, but now I’m apparently allergic to it) but I’m looking for something new.

    LOL, thanks!! I know, I am really happy to have them too. The lipstick is truly awesome – it’s just like a lip balm! The last one I had (which is about to be swapped) had a weird duochrome shimmer that just wasn’t very flattering (plus it was ridiculously light for my complexion) but I am so, so pleased with this one. :D And hahaha, hope my FOTD tomorrow pleases. =)

    yay your P&J order finally came! hehe after reading all your twitter updates I was getting a little worried for your package as well :) I’m glad the P&J lipstick is pigmented because the last two I bought barely showed up on my pigmented lips! The color you got sounds great though, can’t wait to see some FOTD with it.

    Hehehe, yay! I know, I was so frustrated about it because I actually expected it on Friday and had been so looking forward to it. Plus, when it was dispatched from Anaheim on Saturday I called UPS to ask them about it and the operator assured me that it would get here that day “guaranteed.” T_T;

    Yea, I totally agree with you about P&J lipsticks. My lips are pretty pigmented too so I tried to pick a pretty bright color (’cause for some reason I find the really dark ones to usually be the sheerest of all!) and I am happy I was successful. :D

    congrats on ur UCD acceptance :) I hope you get to hear back from more schools soon :) I’d be so excited if you move to Nor-Cal, hehehe :)

    aww sorry to hear about your stressful week and ur skin acting up! I think the Paul & Joe whitening serum really helps with fading my acne scars. and I heard the Face Shop post acne nighttime spot eraser works really well, I need to get to my face shop soon and get a tube of that to try out! I hate how I always get acne scars every month even if they were the tinest pimples, argh, my skin doesn’t scar well at all :(

    yay for your Paul & Joe goodies! The blush is so pretty! How did I miss that one! the lippie looks pretty and i love the name, sounds so cute and delicious, hehehe <3

    Thank you!! Teeheehee, I hope so too! I’ve got interviews this week at UCSD Biology and then at UCSF iPQB the week after with midterms in between so it’ll be a little hectic. Then I don’t think I’ll hear from either of them until March…? =/

    Thanks for the recommendations!! I have to admit, I’ve always been pretty lucky with my skin. Most of my small pimples I can actually pop and they don’t leave a mark. It’s the cystic blighters that really bother me and it takes my skin forever to heal. The funny thing is I don’t even get real “acne scars” the way most people do. It’s more like I have a residual reddish blemish that lasts for a few months after the pimple is mostly healed… and then I have hyperpigmentation that takes another few months to fade. But super irritating. ;_;

    Hehehe, thanks! I can’t wait to see your P&J stuff too!!!

    the origins spot treatment is pretty good for me.. but i’d try a sample before buying the whole thing, it can be sort of drying if you’re not careful on applying it to JUST those needed areas.. like me.. hahaha. ugh!

    very pretty colors :D

    yay for UCD! my friend goes up there too :) unfortunately it’s a tad far.. so i’d better visit you before you leave SD!

    Oooooooh – thanks so much for the rec! I’ll definitely look into it.

    Duuuuude, I am so sad I wasn’t into makeup when they were still at Sephora! But yea, they definitely exist. I think the easiest places to get them are either on primpingparleur.com(?) or beautyhabit.com. Apparently the Bergdorf’s in NYC has a counter as well (and The Primping Parleur has a physical location in LA) but it’s pretty limited in the US these days. Sad too because the stuff is so awesome.

  9. aw that sucks about UPS/your package. at least you were able to get everything sorted out. the lipstick is gorgeous. I’m looking forward to your FOTD :) as for acne scar erasers, I remember seeing karen review something from clinique on mbb that she said worked very well. I’ve only used DHC’s acne whitening gel to help git rid of scarring, and it worked pretty well for me. Nothing amazing, but I remember it being fairly effective (haven’t used it in awhile though, I’ll dig it up and retest it and post a review as soon as I can for you :D) I’m not sure how accessible that will be too you though, I googled it and saw it for sale for around $20, and I got mine for 5-10 bucks in Asia, so that’s definitely a rip-off.

    Catherine responds:

    Yea. I am continually angry at USPS/UPS here. LOL.

    Oooh, thanks for the recommendations! I’ll definitely take a look. Can’t wait for your review! :D

  10. Mika says:

    Hey Catherine!
    I ordered from Soft Surroundings too and I received my P&J Eyeshadow palette intact.. but I agree, the white plastic bubble mailer is NOT enough protection!
    And my god, the UPS shipping was so slow and the package kept going around and around from city to city and it took like a whole week to get to my home. My other item, the P&J poppy cosmetic bag also went out of stock and they offered me a $10 certificate on my next purchase but I don’t think I’ll ever use it…
    ANYWAY I’m glad that you liked your items and I’m looking forward to seeing it in fotds!

    Catherine responds:

    Hey Mika!! So glad to hear from you! How are you btw??

    And DUDE!!!! I have no idea what was going through the packer’s heads!! I was considering buying the P&J Compact mirror because I’ve been wanting that forever, but after I saw how my first order came… pretty sure it’s going to be my last order. =/

    Aww… sorry about the poppy bag… I know a lot of girls had their stuff go OOS. =/ Can’t wait to see what else you got though!

    She wanted to help me out to get it for me, but it turned out that the price tag in Australia is super heavy. So I didn’t get it yet. :/

    Ooooh, I’m really LOVING the Buffering Lotion so far, it seems to work really well on drying up my stubborn cystic acne (usually I just put a clay mask like earthscience papaya glycolic peel [rly not a peel lol] on the small ones, but it doesn’t work on the really large buggers). I would be happy to send you a bottle – it’s only $17 here and it should last a really long time since it’s a liquid treatment.

    I like that lip color shade. How about trying some natural products for your face? I also have bad acne scars that trying to get rid off. I heard black african soap and papaya works to clear up the face. And moisturize with a little shea butter. But make sure it’s the real stuff.
