NOTD: OPI Girls Love Pink! + Sequins and Rhinestones

Hi guys! This is literally a NOTD since I have to take it off tomorrow before my first grad school interviews (we’re apparently starting with dinner Wednesday night and then I’m booked 8am-10pm Thursday and Friday O_O;). BUT – I really wanted to do something pretty and sparkly for today as it’s my 3rd anniversary with SO. Also unfortunately, we won’t get to celebrate today since he has class until 5pm and I have class from 5-9:30pm, but I think we’re going to go out for dinner on Saturday. =)

Orly Bonder, 3 coats OPI Girls Love Pink!, sequins from Daiso, Fing’rs Nail Art rhinestones, Sally Hansen Invisible Shield topcoat, Seche Vite

It’s kinda sloppy ’cause I knew I would be taking it off soon… and I smashed my right index nail into a mug like, right after I finished but meh, it’s sparkly enough to be not that noticeable. I was pretty proud of myself though – I finished from topcoat to the end of my 15 minute wait after quick-dry in just under an hour! I think that’s a record for me, especially with an OPI polish (they dry really fast so it’s much harder to stick stones/sequins on versus slower-drying polish). Edit: You can’t really tell because my nails are “upside down” but most of the pearly rhinestone + one or two heart sequins are meant to be fireflies or butterflies hovering over flowers (left middle, right thumb, ring and pinkie).

Eyes: UD Fishnet, Ransom, L’Oreal HIP Violet Volt
Cheeks: Shu Uemura Lolly Cherry; Lips: Shu Uemura Venus Pink

And here’s a crappy Photobooth pic of my FOTD. Wearing purples since I wanted to test out that purple HIP liner (it’s on my bottom lashline – pretty no??). I’m also showing off the Swarovski heart pendant and Zoe Chicco bow ring SO bought me for the last two Christmases. You can’t see, but I’m also wearing a bracelet he got me and the Steppie Ninja sweatshirt he got me as well teeheehee. (And my bunny studs but you can’t see them here either.)

    happy anniversary!!! n_n

i love how you used the hearts and turned them into bows and flowers. i’ve never seen that before and i think it’s really creative.

but, do you have any advice on getting them to lay flat? i have this huge problem where flat sequins + curved nail bed = lifted edges that get caught in everything (hair, clothing, etc.) :C

    Catherine responds:

Hehehe, thanks! I forgot to mention, a few of those are meant to be fireflies/butterflies though I guess it’s hard to tell since they’re upside down LOL.

Hmm. I got my sequins from Daiso and they’re decently flexible. I wait until the polish is pretty tacky – almost dry, really – to place the sequins and then use a toothpick or the pointed end of a cuticle pusher to press the edges into the polish. It doesn’t always work perfectly but it definitely helps. Additionally, a thick coat of regular topcoat before quick-dry really helps to seal the edges so hair/cloth/what-have-you can’t slide underneath. HTH!

    pfefi responds:

thanks~ i’ll definitely give it another go. the ones i have are “body glitter” from claire’s (which is a whole bunch of silliness in itself) but they’re star shaped so i need to figure out a way to push down 4 or 5 points at once. xD

also, your Daiso is clearly superior to mine. mine only has a few sets of nail art things and they’re meh. :|

    Catherine responds:

Ooh, yea, stars are definitely harder to do – I think getting smaller, thinner ones helps a lot and putting it not wet but not dry polish. That way the star can’t lift up too wet polish but it’ll still stick. I just use a toothpick and push each point down one at a time. I do admit when I do stars usually at least one edge gets bent up a little after a day or two though. Luckily it’s usually not anything annoying enough to bother with.

And aww. I do love my Daiso.

Prettyprettypretty nails! It’s sad you smudged one of them though >< I *always* do that kind of thing, literally right after I've painted my nails, so I always apply and remove nail varnish at least 3 times (2 coats each time) before I actually get what I want, and that's just normal nail varnish, none of this pretty rhinestone and sparkle!

The FOTD looks pretty! Especially liking the eyemakeup and the lipstick is really pretty! <3 Shu Uemura.

And RYC: Thanks for the tip and the link! I will check it out when I can get youtube to work. It's still blocked! But wow, =_=; Maybe I really should stop eating sugar. But its so hard to resist the temptation of cakes, and chocolate and sweets!! Especially when our house is so full of them because my kid brother is a little piggy who can eat whatever he wants and not suffer any consequences in terms of fat deposition, literally, all he does is grow upwards! I find it really hard not to eat the junk food when I can see him stuffing his face with snacks.

Good luck with your grad school interviews though! I'm sure you'll do just fine! =)

    Catherine responds:

Thanks! OMG I KNOW. I’d gotten so good at being careful with them too! Usually they’re tacky and dry enough on the top that I don’t ruin them but this time I like, literally smacked the nail into the top corner of a mug. T_T; And awwww. I don’t think I would have the patience for that! (Though, I totally feel you, I used to redo my nails a bunch of times and then get so fed up I’d take it all off again.) Have you tried any OPI polishes? I swear they are the quickest dry formula ever – usually my right hand is basically dry by the time I finish painting my left.

    & aww, thanks. I don’t feel so pretty today lol. My stupid shoulder started acting up again since I carried a really heavy textbook to campus. T_T;

Ooooooh. Do check it out when you get the chance. As far as chocolate – girl, you know I can’t resist either!! LOL. But I think the key is moderation and keeping the rest of your diet healthy, ykwim? Eating more fiber can counteract practically all the effects of sugar! And dude – srsly for your health, it is really important. Genetically, my family doesn’t really gain/lose weight that much and both my parents are thin like I am, but my mom is on medication for high blood pressure and my dad is pre-diabetic and has had high triglycerides his entire life so it’s definitely something I worry about. Gaining weight isn’t the only thing to be scared of, ykwim??

    Jian responds:

Ah, I can’t believe I forgot to say Happy Anniversary. T_T I just re-read my comment, and I thought I had, but I obviously didn’t! Hopefully you’ll have a lovely time on Saturday =)

And I totally know what you mean. =_=; I used to be much skinnier before I met my boyfriend, he really likes pork belly (which I limit the buying of to once per month, maximum), bacon (which I limit to twice a month otherwise he’d always get it), and stuff like that. We’re both a little tubby now though, so obviously my limiting wasn’t good enough xD I agree about the fibre, we usually eat tonnes of that stuff. We have a super-chunky minestrone for dinner at least once a week, with tonnes of extra vegetables because I feel unhealthy D=

Wow, sorry to hear about your parents! I keep telling my mum to get off her butt and exercise, but since she’s okay right now she doesn’t. My dad always exercises, he NEVER misses his 3/4 hour at the gym everyday, even if he’s got some science presentation to do in front of NOBEL PRIZE LAUREATES the the next week and he hasn’t started hte presentation yet (yes, this happened about two weeks ago. we weren’t very impressed with him, but it went well so it was fine xD)

And oh noo, your shoulder! >< I know this sounds *really* dumb, but maybe you could invest in one of those little bags with wheels with a pull-out handle? It looks stupid, but hopefully it won't cause your shoulder any more trouble with carrying heavy things to and from university (although if there's a lot of steps and no lift/ramp I guess it's not ideal either).

    Catherine responds:

Aww lol, no worries at all. I hope so too! I’m getting a haircut with the BFF earlier that day, so hope it goes well teeheehee. Sadly I’m spending the rest of my weekend studying for midterms (I have two back to back Tuesday) before I fly out for more interviews later in the week.

Oooh, pork belly is amazing! So is bacon. We eat very little of either of those though, actually, and not much meat either. I think we’ve had bacon maybe 5x in the last year, all of those were in a recipe for butternut squash with sage pasta and … I believe 3x SO bought turkey bacon which wasn’t quite fatty enough to really fry the sage in so I had to add olive oil LOL. Fats actually don’t cause weight gain nearly as much as sugar though, so I’d start with the sugar first. I’m glad you’re eating lots of fiber – it’s really good for you! We eat whole wheat pasta and brown/black rice almost exclusively, and we try to buy whole wheat bread (though it’s kind of expensive because the cheap stuff tastes like cardboard T_T;). If you can find them, sprouted wheat bagels are pretty amazing though, and soba noodles are fantastic too!

YEA. They’re doing pretty ok, but it was a bit of a shock for my dad to have his doctor basically tell him that he needed to stop eating cereal (frosted mini wheats) and drinking fruit juice (’cause… they’re not real fruit juice, mostly tons of sugar) otherwise he would be diabetic within a few months, especially since he exercises regularly and has considered himself to be very healthy (at least as far as not eating junk food, fatty food) his entire life. (It’s amazing though, because his triglycerides went from over 600 to under 100 [normal, apparently] in about two months!!) It really goes to show you how important healthy balanced eating is and how much we didn’t know and still don’t know about nutrition and metabolism. I feel like people often focus too much on weight as an indication of unhealthiness when being “skinny fat” is really often just as bad for you in the long run, ykwim? It’s important to eat healthy and exercise no matter what size you are!

Yea. I’m really sad about it. I don’t think it was so much the weight as that the muscle was triggered as a result of repeated injury (this happens to me fairly often with the other shoulder), because honestly, the backpack is not *that* heavy and I only carried it around walking for maybe 20 minutes noncontinuously before it started hurting and I parked myself down at the library and didn’t move for about 8 hrs. I don’t usually bring textbooks to school though, which is why I don’t have a good backpack lol. But I did have one of those rolly backpacks in middle school! =)

First off good luck on your interview and congratulations on your anniversary! I like your make-up, the purple eye make-up really suits you! I wish we get the the L’Oreal HIP line in the UK, they seem to have so many great products.

The bows and butterflies are so cute, but do the sequins and rhinestones fall off very easily?

    Catherine responds:

Thank you! :D Purples are my favorite… or possibly tied with taupes hehe.

I press sequins and rhinestones into wet/tacky polish and seal with a medium thick coat of regular topcoat followed by a coat of quick-dry topcoat. I usually wear my nail polish for 7 days and I can’t remember the last time I had a rhinestone or sequin fall off before I took it off. I also wrap my tips, but my polish usually chips way faster than the rhinestones come off.

I love it when you post your NOTD/NOTW – I wish I could get away with wearing the cute rhinestones and glitter the way you do…damn this corporate conservative job, lol. Wearing anything that isn’t in the realm of french manicure/sheer/taupe gets a lot of questions. That’s adorable the way you made little flower petals and butterflies/dragonflies!

Awwww, lol. Part of the reason I’m so happy I’m in science/engineering where you’re evaluated on your skills and knowledge. SO and I hear all these interview tips all the time, about not wearing colored polish, not wearing dangly earrings, dressing up, ties are necessary for guys etc and we’re just like “T_T;;;” ’cause I mean seriously, would you even want to work for a company that did or didn’t hire you based on something as retarded as that? I mean, obviously it’s important to look clean and presentable, but I’m happy to know I’m going to be judged based on my skills and expertise, not the way I dress.

The HIP Chrome liners are pretty amazing. I wore the gold one on my inner bottom lashline and though some of it disappeared (like, the line got thinner, if that makes sense) it didn’t really smudge and what was left was still very chrome and vibrant after 6-8hrs. I wore the purple one on my entire lower lashline for nearly 18hrs yesterday and while much of the color had faded, it was still going REALLY strong when I took it off – I mean in the sense that the darkness of the liner was retained but the vibrance of the color had faded somewhat so it looked like a really dark almost black instead of a metallic purple (but srsly, after 17 hours or however much it was I was super impressed). Unfortunately I don’t wear liner on my top lids because they’re too uneven to draw even lines, so I can’t comment on how they would wear there.
