2009-2010 Winter Favorites

Hi guys! Today I’m doing my very first “Favorites” post. Funny, ’cause this blog is almost a year old. I’ve never really been able to get on the bandwagon with monthly favorites – every time they roll around I’m caught by surprise and by the time I’m ready to post it’s already time for the next month’s favorites! LOL. So instead, I’ll be doing quarterly favorites by seasons. Here are my 10 favorites for December 2009 – February 2010 (Winter). Click the links to see posts about or looks I’ve done with the products. =)

  1. Shu Uemura Glow On Blush P Wine 25

I just got this in the middle of February so it’s a bit late in the whole favorites game, but I’ve probably used it more than any of my other blushes for the entire 3 months. It gives the prettiest pink flush with two taps of my EcoTools mineral powder/blush brush in the pan. I love the Glow On formula so much I seriously considered replacing all my blushes with Shu Glow Ons.

  2. Laura Mercier Petite Eye Palette Holiday 2009 – Warm

This palette doesn’t look like much, but it’s a super portable quad of really pretty neutrals. I got it mid-January in preparation for my graduate school interviews. (That third color is almost a dead dupe color-wise for UD Underground, my favorite taupe!)

  3. NYX Single Eyeshadows, 54 Cherry

I got my first NYX shadows because of Jen’s Valentine’s Day Look and I’m so glad I did! I really love Cherry. A few of the other ones fade on me a bit, but I still think they’re overall fabulous for the price (especially when they’re BOGO at Ulta!).

  4. Tsumori Chisato for Shu Uemura Holiday 2009 Duo Highlighter in Golden Snow

Love it. It gives me a subtle glow during the daytime and it works great to spruce up a look for evening. And it’s just so darn cute!

  5. MAC Spiced Chocolate Quad

LOVE. I got this from Tammy’s blogsale right at the beginning of January. If I could wear this every day, I probably would.

  6. Laura Mercier Stickgloss in Sugar Plum

The most versatile lipstick I own. Fantastic formula and looks great with all pink blushes.

  7. L’Occitane Green Tea EDT

    Fresh and pretty!

  8. HIP Chrome Liner in Violet Volt

Another late in the quarter purchase, but I’ve seriously used it almost every day since I bought it. So pretty. :D

  9. MAC 188

From SO for our 3rd anniversary! I have to say, while I might not like it much for applying NARS Sin, it is awesome for putting anything on with precision, from blush to highlighter or what-have-you. I like to use it for putting a tad of Shu P Wine 25 on my apples to perk up other blushes.

  10. MAC for Hello Kitty 187SE

It still bleeds and sheds, but it’s still my favorite brush for putting on pigmented blushes. I just bounce it slightly off center of the apples of my cheeks for the perfect flush.

I seriously think one reason I have such trouble with this is because I can’t remember what I used a lot during the month or even two weeks ago…? I have such short term memory LOL. Do you keep a list of monthly “favorites?”

Haha yea, sometimes when I am using a product I’ll tell myself to put it in my list of favorite to post later and then I forget! So now I write the names down if it’s early in the month.

Those r some great favorites! Thanks do much for sharing!

Hehehe. I think I need to make a new sticky on my dashboard just for this. I guess it’d also help if I did FOTDs more often. & I’m glad you enjoyed reading. I sometimes wonder if it’s actually useful, but I guess it’s nice to see everything together. =)

Ohh I’m so glad to hear you eventually liked your 188! I want one! :P

I wanted to get a Laura Mercier holiday palette last year (the cool one), but I decided against it. Looking at the pictures, I really like the size of it. I’ll be on the hunt for it for sure.

I’d like to think that *all* of my makeup stash belongs in my favourites. I switch up my blush every day, and same goes for my eyeshadows. :) When I find standouts in my stash, those get a big ol’ review on my blog.

It took a little while to get used to but yea, it’s great! I think I just don’t like it for applying blush quite yet b/c of the scars I still have on my cheeks.

Dude, I so want the cool palette too! If only for African Violet – that shadow is freaking gorgeous!! And… I actually kind of hate the shape of the palette. The mirror’s basically useless and it’s actually kind of hard to open. The first couple times I tried I ended up sticking my fingers into the shadows. I really wish she’d made it a square shape instead of a long skinny rectangle. It is super portable though.

Aww, good for you! I try to switch up my shadows every day, but that just means I tend to wear the same few combinations every few days and I definitely go on blush binges where I only wear one for an entire week. I need to figure out a better system! LOL!

They’re seriously quite nice. I still want a Sonia Kashuk one if I can find it though, I’ve heard that one’s in between the 188 and 187 in size, so I think it’d actually be *perfect.*

  4. You’ve convinced me to try out LM lippies! I now want to try the Shu blushes. This one looks lovely.

Aww, I hope you love them as much as I do! And definitely try out the Shu blushes! They’re amazing!! I think they’re *much* more finely milled than the NARS. They’re very pigmented, but easy to work with and they really honestly look like you’re not wearing blush but just have a natural glow! I can’t wait to get more teehee.

I haven’t done my monthy favorites since November… mostly because whenever I try to gather them all I can’t really think of anything that i’m particuarly loving! I love reading about other peoples though :) i’ve been lemming for the MAC spiced chocolate quad, the colors are SOOO percet. I wish it was still avaliable! xo

    Catherine responds:

I love reading everyone’s monthly favorites too but I’m like you – nothing really stands out to me unless it’s been in the last week or so LOL. Ah, I was really lucky to snag Spiced Chocolate, especially so late. Good luck though – it still turns up in blogsales every now and then!

  6. I’ve yet to do a monthly faves post b/c my faves seem to change all the time….lol! XD Love your MAC brushes though I’m sorry to hear the HK one sheds and bleeds.

P.S Thanks for the sweet comment! I’m too cheap and lazy to re-dye so I’m just going to wait till the roots kick in…lol. ;)

Yea, I’m so annoyed at the MAC HK one. It’s so cute and it stopped bleeding a long time ago, but then it just started up bleeding a month or two ago again? I didn’t even switch soap or anything!! T_T; I have to say the f/s 188 is *awesome* though.

& hehe. I don’t blame you at all & I think the color is really pretty for in the meantime!

  7. My memory is terrible, but I usually remember what my monthly favorites are just because I end up reaching for them almost every day. The Shu blush looks fantatsic, I’ve seen those a lot at the mall, will definitely go check them out next time. ooh your LM quad looks a lot like my Shu one colorwise, which is now my favorite for neutral looks. The Kenzo EDT sounds like the type of scent I would love, could you do a review on that sometime please? :D

    Catherine responds:

Hehe, I’ve decided to keep a spreadsheet or something or other of FOTDs and then tally up the uses. I still can’t imagine doing favorites monthly though, my tastes change so much during one month even!

Oooh, definitely check out the Shu Glow Ons, they’re really gorgeous! I love Shu shadows too, but I only have one palette. I’m still too cheap and OCD to purchase single eyeshadows lol. I like everything to be organized.

Oh, the Green Tea is actually from L’Occitane. I don’t usually do fragrance reviews because I’m not *that* good at discerning notes and so … I can’t really say much except that it smells fresh and pretty lol. I think it’s misnamed because I get mostly citrus and sugar from it (like I wish Fresh Sugar Lemon was like) plus a very tiny bit of a watery floral and it doesn’t change that much besides losing the citrus as it dries down. The staying power is really not that good, 3-4 hours at best. It’s still my favorite “fresh” scent though, at least until I can afford Jo Malone’s Fig & Cassis!

Yay I love favorites posts!! I don’t know why… maybe it’ll give me new products to consider I guess. But anyways I love it and I’m glad you love that blush so much! Maybe that liner pencil… that has been getting great reviews.

    Catherine responds:

I love reading them too! It’s cool seeing what people buy and review and all but I think it’s so much fun seeing what they actually use, ykwim? I wish my photos were better though, I *adore* Lina‘s favorites posts.

The Shu blushes are amazing. I should have another one coming in the mail this week *crosses fingers.* And dude, the HIP liners have been $5 for a week a lot recently at CVS. They’ve done it twice now ($5 all L’Oreal eye), so if you happen to catch one of the sales, TOTALLY worth it! Cheaper than even Prestige at that price!

Wow, so much good stuff! I only have a travel set of MAC’s brushes, but now that I think about it, maybe I should invest in some more brushes! :D

    [Reply]

    Catherine responds:

Hahaha, thanks! Ooh, the full-size MAC brushes are truly, truly superior to their travel sizes. I’m not sure that MAC brushes overall are superior to other brands (I really love my EcoTools, Crown and EDM) since I only have the 188, but it is fabulous. I have to admit I kind of want to replace my entire collection with MAC brushes, it would make my inner OCD so happy LOL. But I also eventually want a NARS Yachiyo, and I don’t think MAC makes a lid placement brush small enough for my eyes so oh well.

Great Fav’s list. Everytime I see your Tsumori Chisato for Shu Uemura products I get jealous all over again =)

I heard the HIP Chrome Liners work really well, I heard you can even wear them on your water line and they don’t smudge. Have you had the same success with them?

OMG! My HK brush bleeds the same color, like a weird greenish grey color. I’ve washed it so many times and it still bleeds. Isn’t that weird? I still love it, but I always get grossed out when I wash it. =P
    .-= Diane´s last blog ..February Favorites =-.

    Catherine responds:

Aww, lol. I love my Tsumori Chisato x Shu Uemura stuff. True investment products. ♥

Hm, I don’t line my waterline, so I can’t really tell… but I line my lower lashline and they do “wash away” significantly at the inner and outer corner, but just a little at the inner and outer corner. The rest of the line is very much intact for the entire day, and the part that does go away doesn’t smudge away, if that makes sense.

    And duuuuude! Well I’m so glad to know mine’s not the only one that does that. I’m so annoyed though, ’cause mine like… dries black? Like, I feel like I’ve washed all the dye out, but when I come back a few hours later there’s black dye in the white bristles, like the drying drew it there or something! And rinsing again doesn’t work either because it just happens all over again! So… instead I’ve just been wiping it off on a clean towel and that seems to be working, but so annoying!!! T_T;

  14. sarah says:

hahaha! i never keep up a list of my favorites, i just use what i use. and i don’t tend to get many new products so it’s hard for me to do a “hits or misses” sort of thing.. though i HAVE been wanting to!
    .-= sarah´s last blog ..Still alive! =-.

    [Reply]

    Catherine responds:

Hahaha, I swap a lot… so I almost always have something new coming in whether I buy or not (it makes taking stash pictures so hard!). I need to cut down though… both lol.

Ooh, I hate doing misses. I guess I don’t really enjoy reading about people’s outs or trash things that didn’t work for them. I think it’s because in my view those posts are usually done with very little thought or testing. I’d rather have a full fledged review of a bad item instead of someone just saying it sucks. Plus… I dunno. I’m careful in my spending/swapping so I rarely ever end up with misses….?
