Product Focus: Laura Mercier Stickgloss

Hi guys! I’ve been meaning to do this post for a long time, actually, but I kept accumulating stickglosses so I never had a complete picture! LOL! Anyway, today I want to bring you a special review on one of my favorite cosmetics products EVER – the Laura Mercier Stickgloss. As you can see, I have 7, which easily makes the Stickgloss my most purchased/swapped for product in my entire collection.

Laura Mercier Stickglosses in Baked Earth, Peach Sorbet, Poppy, Cranberry, Black Orchid, Sugar Plum, Rosewater

The Stickglosses aren’t necessarily a unique concept – lots of brands have glossy finish lipsticks that are supposed to be like a gloss in a tube. For me, what makes Laura Mercier’s so special is the formula.

First, the texture is just incredible. They have a light balm-like texture that has, in my opinion, the perfect amount of slip. They are very comfortable to wear and are the only lipsticks I have ever found that I don’t have to wear balm under. They are advertised as hydrating and they are the only lipsticks that do actually lightly condition my lips and leave them better off than when I first put them on. (For reference, I have stupidly dry, sensitive lips and I find both the MAC Lustre finish lipsticks and all the Burt’s Bees lip balms to be drying.) Furthermore, the Stickglosses look beautiful. They are incredibly forgiving to deep vertical liplines and dryness, and they never sink, feather or bleed.

Second, the pigmentation is excellent. Unlike other brands, I find the Stickglosses to all be buildable to opaque. While they may not necessarily photograph this way because of the glossiness, they can definitely be full-coverage, even on my pigmented lips. I have struggled finding sheers that show up true to tube in other brands (*coughDIORcough*), but I’ve never been disappointed by a Stickgloss. That being said, they can easily be worn sheer as well. In this regard, I think the Stickglosses are some of the most versatile lip products out there since they wear equally well no matter how you wear it.

Aside from that, lasting power is decent, a good 4-5 hours on me with no eating though some of the darker colors easily last through some light snacking as well. Considering I have very dry lips, and most lip color billed as “long-lasting” causes an entire layer of my lips to flake and peel off within half an hour, I am very happy with the lasting power of the Stickglosses. I also think Laura Mercier has done a phenomenal job formulating colors that are truly easily wearable by a very wide variety of skintones. I don’t feel like I have to work to wear any of the colors I have (which is about half the line and I’m eyeing more!).

Laura Mercier Stickglosses in Baked Earth, Peach Sorbet, Poppy, Cranberry, Black Orchid, Sugar Plum, Rosewater

Here are the swatches – I do apologize the lighting makes the colors run a little yellow. I’ve linked each name to all the FOTDs I’m wearing the color in, so you can see how they actually look. Like I said, they don’t swatch or photograph that well on the arm, but they do build up to opaque on my lips in real life. I personally think most of the Laura Mercier website color descriptions are inaccurate and their color swatches are horrid.

Baked Earth is a warm brown red with very subtle gold shimmer. It’s my favorite to throw on everyday because it’s MLBB for my pigmented lips. Peach Sorbet is probably my new favorite lip color ever – it’s a very bright, satin-finish medium peach-coral that really lights up my face. Poppy is a bright orange-red with silver and red shimmer. Cranberry is a glossy cream that is muted medium berry pink when applied sheerly and builds up to a true neutral red when layered. It’s the only red I have that doesn’t pull pink or orange on me. It also really brings out the natural flush in my cheeks (this is pretty impressive considering it’s basically nonexistant) and doesn’t make me look sallow. Black Orchid is the sheerest Stickgloss I own, and is a medium purply plum-berry cream. It’s what I think Clinique Black Honey should have been (Black Honey is totally a sheer red.). Sugar Plum is probably the most versatile Stickgloss I own. It’s a slightly-warm medium pink cream that pairs really well with practically any combination I have ever tried to pair it with. Rosewater is a high shimmer, satin finish peachy pink, leaning on the pink side.

Unfortunately, Peach Sorbet is discontinued, but I think Tiger Lily is similar.

Here are the ingredients, from Sephora:

Pentaerythrityl Tetraisostearate, Isostearyl Isostearate, Ricinus Communis (Castor) Seed Oil, Lanolin Oil, Hydrogenated Polyisobutene, Polybutene, Polyethylene, Pentaerythrityl, Hydrogenated Rosinate, Euphorbia Cerifera (Candelilla) Wax Pentaerythrityl Tetraisostearate, Isostearyl Isostearate, Ricinus Communis (Castor) Seed Oil, Lanolin Oil, Hydrogenated Polyisobutene, Polybutene, Polyethylene, Pentaerythrityl, Hydrogenated Rosinate, Euphorbia Cerifera (Candelilla) Wax Palmitate, Fragrance (Parfum), Dipalmitoyl Hydroxyproline, Silica, Tribehenin, Glycine Soja (Soybean) Oil, Ascorbyl Palmitate, Retinyl Palmitate, Vitis Vinifera (Grape ) Seed Oil, Oenothera Biennis (Evening Primrose) Oil, Carthamus Tinctorius (Safflower) Seed Oil, Tocopherol, Sorbitan Isostearate, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Extract, Palmitoyl Oligopeptide, Camellia Sinensis Leaf Extract, Mica ( CI 77019), Titanium Dioxide (CI77891), Iron Oxides (CI 77491), Red 7 Lake (CI 15850). May Contain (+/-): Iron Oxides (CI 77492, CI 77499), Carmine (CI 75470), Bismuth Oxychloride (CI 77163), Manganese Violet (CI 77742), Blue 1 Lake (CI 42090), Yellow 5 Lake (CI 19140), Yellow 6 Lake (CI 15985), Red 6 (CI 15850), Red 21 (CI 45380), Red 22 Lake (CI 45380), Red 27 (CI 45410), Red 28 Lake (CI 45410), Red 30 Lake (CI 73360), Red 33 Lake (CI 17200), Red 36 (CI 12085).

The Stickglosses are widely available wherever Laura Mercier is sold (Nordstroms, Neiman Marcus, Laura Mericer.com) except for Sephora which only stocks 4 of them (Courtisane, Black Orchid, Brown Sugar and Peony). I adore the Stickglosses. I rarely wear other lipsticks these days (and when I do they’re usually my Tsumori Chisato Rouge Unlimiteds!) because these are so low maintenance and comfortable!

Hehe, thanks! Don’t they look so pretty all lined up?! I actually can’t remember the last time I wore a lipstick that wasn’t a Stickgloss or Rouge Unlimited. They pretty much beat out all other lipsticks I’ve tried and I’ve tried a LOT that are supposed to be “moisturizing.” I think you would really love Baked Earth and Brown Sugar (nude).

I really love Laura Mercier overall as a brand too! I think the stickglosses are one of the best products in her line that I can wear (I’m sorely disappointed I’m allergic to the sunscreens in her tinted moisturizers and Hydratint balms).

  4. This shouldn’t surprise you but I’ve never tried stickglosses before! You have such a big and varied selection…wow!!

And thanks, girlie! Yep, I would’ve never thought of B&N either until I got the coupon. I’ve noticed that they have a lot of cute stuff now. Yay to that! Hehe ;)

omggg so jealous of your stickglosses collection! I’ve been lemming them ever since you mentioned them to me on Twitter! Catherine responds:

LOL. Well I’ve been collecting (and raving about) them for a long time!

I think makeup names are so funny. I prefer food/plant names way more compared to girl’s names, but … I’m really not sure these are all that accurate. And then they just threw Courtisane in there for fun.

But no, seriously – I do think the formula is one of the best out there. I haven’t tried every lipstick out there, but I’ve tried a lot of lipsticks that people have claimed to be “so moisturizing” only to be very disappointed. These are the best I’ve found yet.

ORLY? Laura Mercier is probably one of my favorite brands! Right up there with Shu Uemura! (In fact, those are probably my two favorite brands.) Rosewater is really, really pretty. I definitely recommend all the LM products I have – I think she makes very easily workable products. =)

  15. Hey sweets, I think we are pretty similar in color? What I noticed that was really great about the Illamasqua line is that they have a nice range of colors so if “Katie” doesn’t work for you, you’re bound to find one that does. :) I am really liking the Tarte TM so far. I don’t find it oily but it may be b/c my skin’s drier than yours and I also lightly dust powder on top of it?

    [Reply]

    Catherine responds:

Thanks so much for the feedback! I can’t wait until I’m in a city that stocks Illamasqua. I tried to go look at the blushes while I was in SF but SO was too impatient for me to really swatch anything lol.

Yea… I am definitely on the oilier side – that’s probably why!

Ooh, I love the Laura Mercier plumping lip glosses too, but I’m just not much of a gloss wearer. I think the Stickglosses are well worth the money if you have problems with other lipcolors sinking into your liplines (like I do ;_;). They’re seriously the only lipstick I know I can just put on straight out of the tube and not have to fuss over.

Great review. I like the idea that this actually stays on dry lips. I can’t stand the inevitable flaky lip-peel that you described. Although, for the price of Laura Mercier I suppose it’s only to be expected :P

And for the prices I’ve paid on Dior and other brands, I actually consider the Stickglosses to be excellent value for the money. =)

    How are you?

    [Reply]

  25. i have always been on the fence about these lispticks from Laura Mercier since my failed trial with her lip palettes. but many told me that i shouldn’t be afraid of these as lip palettes tend to be drier. hmm, now your swatch picture does make them look yummy. i think i’d reconsider trying them.

    Catherine responds:

Ooh, I’ve never tried her lip palettes, or any of her other lipsticks. I don’t think you’ll find the stickglosses drying, though, they’re seriously the most moisturizing/non-drying lipsticks I have ever tried. Definitely beats out both the Shu Uemura Rouge Unlimiteds and Dior Addict High Shines. If you’ve ever tried the Cover Girl TruShines, I think those are similar, though a little heavier, waxier and less conditioning (and obviously are discontinued now and didn’t come in nearly as pretty colors, etc).

    [Reply]

  26. i don’t like dior high shine at all. i also dislike shu uemura l/s in general. so if you said these are better than them, then i should really check them out even if they are discontinued. australia is very slow so i might still have a chance.lol

as for covergirl, we didn’t have it in malaysia but i know it is sold here so i will check that first as it’s a lot cheaper.

    [Reply]

    Catherine responds:

    Hahaha. For what reasons?

I find the Dior Addict High Shines to be ok. Most of them are so sheer they all look the same on my lips. I only bought one – Gipsy Red, which is still a sheer red, but it is pretty. The formula on me is decent for the first hour or so, but as soon as it starts drying down it starts drying out my lips as well. Not flake off a whole layer of my lips drying, but still drying. Plus, the shimmer/glitter bits accumulate in my liplines after a while which is so not a good look.

As for the Shu Uemura Rouge Unlimiteds, I find these unoffensive. I do like the two colors I have (they’re the Tsumori Chisato LE ones, so I love them just for the packaging alone lol) and they photograph really nicely. These aren’t nearly as forgiving to liplines, dryness, etc as the LM stickglosses. But, on my lips they don’t moisturize, but they don’t dry either, even as they dry down, which is more than I can say of any other lipstick I own (except for the LM stickglosses), so they’re my second favorite.

Good luck and let me know what you think! =)

AFAIK, the Stickglosses are a permanent product. Only Peach Sorbet is discontinued of the ones that I swatched. =)

This is such a fabulous review, Catherine! I loved to read the details you went in – so well written!
And of course I love all the colors you own, although I think not all of them would flatter me, hehe…

I love glosses in form of a lipstick a lot, but you are so right, that most of those ‘lipstick glosses’ are mostly on the very sheer side with very little pigmentation. My favorite ‘lipstick glosses’ are the Dior Addict High Shine, since these have a good color-shine ratio in my opinion.

If Laura Mercier was available here in Austria, I’d most probably jump out of the door at once to have the stickglosses checked out, hehe… :P

My holy grail lip treatment product for really dry lips is the Clinique Repairwear Intensive Lip Treatment (I’m always re-purchasing for over 4 years now I think). It’s truly the best ‘lipbalm’ for dry lips! I love to use it as a base before I put on lipstick too (especially when putting on YSL Rouge Volupté, which is very creamy, yet tends to sink into liplines), and it isntantly plumps and smoothes out the lines! Maybe you would like to check it out?! ;)
