Two Chanel Illusion d’Or NOTWs (PicSpam)

Hi guys, lots of pictures today! So, I finally caved on my first Chanel nail polish. I’ve been aware of Chanel’s LE releases for quite a while. I considered buying Jade and Trapeze previously but just couldn’t justify the $23 (now $25) price tag. But then… they made Illusion d’Or. Chanel apparently doesn’t have descriptions of their nail polishes, but Illusion d’Or is, to my eyes, fine gold glitter, irregular iridescent gold flaky glitters and medium hexagonal iridescent blue-purple glitter suspended in a clear base. It is freaking gorgeous. As far as I know, Chanel Illusion d’Or is only available on their website (they have free shipping for Mother’s Day ’till May 2nd), or in their free-standing boutiques.

I first put Id’O over pa A86, which is a metallic mint green. I originally wanted to wear it over a Chanel Jade dupe but I hated how Claire’s Dream Catcher made my hands look (practically inflamed red) so I went with pa A86 instead. Also, irritatingly enough UPS made two delivery attempts before leaving my package at the leasing office, which was then closed the next morning, so I actually wore pa A86 by itself (well + Seche Vite) for two nights before I got to put Illusion d’Or over it. Don’t try to put Illusion d’Or over any quick-dry topcoat. It caused my nail polish to peel away at the edges where I had applied it (which was slightly inside the edge of the nail). (Sorry for the dark pictures, I didn’t get any sunlight pics of this manicure.)

Orly Bonder, 4 coats pa A86, Seche Vite, 1 coat Chanel Illusion d’Or

And then… I put it over Zoya Zara (and added lots of glitter & gems because when I go bling I can’t leave well enough alone). Illusion d’Or is rather hard to capture fully, so I hope these pictures give you an idea of what it’s like in real life (absolutely gorgeous). Please click to full-size the pictures – they’re huge this time. :D

Orly Bonder, 3 coats Zoya Zara, 1 coat Chanel Illusion d’Or, french tip with L.A. Colors Nail Art Striper in Gold Glitter, 1 coat Illusion d’Or (3/4 nail), heart rhinestones from Daiso, Seche Vite
Left hand, multiple lighting conditions.
Right hand, sunlight. Right hand, indirect sunlight.

In retrospect I think I should have just stayed with the single stripe of gold instead of filling in the entire tip, but it’s unfortunately one of those things you can’t really fix after you’ve committed lol. I sadly smudged my right index finger pretty badly right after I did this mani also, but it’s glittery enough I can live with it for a few days. I think I’m going to wear Illusion d’Or over a pink with gold shimmer next. :D

Hey, so you guys probably noticed, I’m trying out a new size of pictures (or rather… I forgot to change my camera setting back). I’d appreciate your input! The new full-size pictures are 1600×1200 & 800×1067 and WordPress’s default “large” thumbnails look to be 450×337 & 337×450. I will probably scale the portrait thumbnails to 300×445. I can’t make the large thumbnails larger unless I load the full size & then scale it (which defeats the purpose of a thumbnail because then your browser has to load the full-size version anyway). The old full-size pictures are 640×480 & 480×640, with the “large” thumbnails being 550×412 (essentially just scaled in width) & 480×640. If you guys prefer the 550 across landscape thumbnails (or if I get irritated enough that my tables no longer line up), I might see if I can find a plugin that allows me to have custom thumbnail sizes (or beg the SO to write one for me :D).

Id’O is gorgeous up close! I don’t think I’ve ever purchased a bottle of Chanel polish, but I used to love this metallic gold polish of theirs that my mom bought a long time ago :)

love it layered with Sara and all the extra bling! I bet it will look gorgeous over a pink shade as well!

OMG, isn’t it amazing?! And ooooooh – vintage Chanel Le Vernis? I wonder which one it was! That must have been so fun as a kid hahaha. I sometimes wish my mom had been more into makeup and girly stuff when I was growing up.

& hehehe, I totally can’t wait to put it over a pink next. I can’t decide hot pink or soft pink though…. And I totally want to put it over P&J 02 as well! But I have to find a nude to put down first!

OH MY GOSH. I have to buy that nail polish now!! I only own one Chanel nail polish, it’s just too expensive usually for me to consider caving in and getting it. That said, I don’t appear to have a problem buying Dior Nail Polishes even though they’re a couple of quid less. Weird. xD

Aughhh I thought about getting that polish!!! I still am on the fence, though… I’ve just been on such a beauty binge lately! I’ve gotta slow down, haha. :) Anyhow, back on topic, I love the way you did your nails with the glitter and gems! That glitter looks hot!!! hahaha :)

    Catherine responds:

LOL. Duuuuuude, if you want it, you gotta get it now. LE Chanel is ridiculously expensive after it’s gone! I’ve been on a serious beauty binge lately as well too… definitely need to buckle down now and enjoy what I already have!

& hehe thanks!! It is a pretty hot glitter. :D

  10. The colors look so yummy. Is that some Lakers love I’m seeing or just coincidence? :)

    They are seriously yummy!! :D

& lol, I’m afraid to report it’s merely coincidence. I don’t really follow sports at all, haha.

Gosh, I ALWAYS digg your manis, Cat!! The minty turquoise is just so cool looking and relaxing on the eyes, and the Zoya + Chanel + rhinestones + gold tip is AMAZING!! It’s lovee!! so girly and princess-like! I REALLY love it. *sigh* i seriously wish I was as creative as you and can paint nails as bomb as you can!!

On average, how long does it usually take you to complete a whole NOTD? I take…like about 2 hrs just to paint my nails bc I keep messing up!! ARGHH!! :’( Do you paint one hand completely, then do the other? or do you do one hand, jump to the other, then go back to the first hand, and finish the second hand? And when/if you get polish on your skin, do you clean it up immediately or do you wait until your nails + topcoat has completely dried, then you clean it? HELP! haha I would appreciate your tips!

    Catherine responds:

Hehehe, thanks!! I’m really glad you like them. And well shucks lol, I just kinda do the same thing with different colors.

& hmm. On average I would say it takes about 2 hours from when I start to take off the existing polish to the time it’s safe for me to touch anything again… but it’s highly variable depending on how many coats of polish I do and how complicated the nail art is (and now much time I spend trying out different combinations and looking for stuff). The fastest was probably my 3 year anni mani which took 1hr from start to finish.

I do each hand by coats, so I’ll paint one coat on each nail on my left hand, then move onto my right hand. I find that this lets the polish dry a little between coats and so the coats go on smoother/less goopy. As for clean-up I’m EXTREMELY lazy. I usually do my nails every Saturday or Sunday night before bed, so I just wait until they’re dry to go to sleep, then I “clean up” mostly in the shower, just by peeling off the dried polish on my skin. If there is polish that just won’t come off the cuticle (or if you like making the perfect gap), I suggest using the pointy q tips or a cheap, pointed shader brush dipped in nail polish remover or pure acetone. I am really lazy though… and so often I won’t photograph a manicure until the 3rd or 4th day because it takes a few showers for me to totally clean up around my nails LOL…. HTH!

OMG, it’s so pretty! I’m sort of glad I’m not into nail polishes a lot because I would be spending mega $$ on them (as shown above in your post, LOL), but I do love reading/looking at other people’s NOTD’s! :D

Isn’t it goooorgeous?! And LOL. Dude, I totally sympathize. I’m kind of the same way with fragrance. I love reading about it, but I know if I got into it it’d be downright dangerous!
