NARS Taj Mahal ♥

Hi guys! So… as you guys may know, I’ve been on quite the blush craze and while I’ve tried to limit myself from buying too many more blushes, I still always seem to buy blush. LOL. Last weekend I was feeling sorry for myself for being sick, so I took a short pick-me-up trip to the mall (don’t worry, I’d been on antibiotics for days so it was very unlikely I was still contagious at that point). One of the items I picked up was NARS Taj Mahal ($26), which I’ve been eyeing for a long time now. In my opinion, it’s not just one of the most unique and beautiful blushes from the NARS line, it’s one of the most unique and beautiful blushes I’ve ever seen!

NARS Taj Mahal powder blush with insert

Isn’t it gorgeous?! I know it looks scary orange in the pan but it’s beautiful when blended out on the face. Taj Mahal is described on the NARS site as a burnt orange with shimmer.

Typical black NARS rubberized compact Back of compact with label

It comes in the typical NARS rubber packaging which I’m kind of torn on. I do like how it looks but I hate how it attracts powder, dust, etc and I’m terrified of when it’ll start melting and getting sticky (many people have reported this with NARS packaging, especially in hot, humid weather).

Taj Mahal has a frost or satin-type finish with gold shimmer and it’s a very gold or yellow-toned orange (like compared to a standard orange highlighter marker, for example). In my opinion, it’s one of the most pigmented NARS blushes as well as one of the smoother ones. Taj Mahal isn’t exactly easy to apply since it is so pigmented, but I find it easier to blend than my other NARS blushes. The texture actually reminds me of the Tarina Tarantino Dollskin blushes (the frost ones, anyway) except much more pigmented. Lasting power is excellent too as long as I spritz with setting spray.

Interesting aside, I usually have the absolute hardest time with NARS blushes lasting on my face! Which is really weird considering everyone raves about how pigmented they are and how long-lasting they are. The last NARS blush I got was Torrid, which I received from the lovely Thao, and while I did like the texture much better, it lasted all of 4 hours on me! Like it literally looked like I had forgotten to put on blush after 4 hours! (And believe me, I am really very sallow – I have no natural cheek pigmentation.) But since it was a gift I was determined to make it work. I finally figured out setting my makeup with Shu Uemura’s Depsea water AFTER blush instead of between powder and blush finally made the powder last on my skin. Now Torrid & the rest of my NARS blushes last for 14 hours with no problems at all. :D

And here are some comparisons of NARS Taj Mahal to other orange-y blushes in my collection. As you can see Taj Mahal is very unique.

Clockwise from top left: Rock & Republic All-Nighter (FOTD), Immoral, MAC Nuance (FOTD), NARS Taj Mahal, MAC Improvise Swatches (L-R): MAC Improvise, Nuance, NARS Taj Mahal, Rock & Republic All-Nighter, Immoral

I basically have nothing like it. Which is awesome! I have a lot of blushes… and I try very hard to keep my collection dupeless. Most of the time when I’m browsing makeup, the blushes I see are very similar or close enough to blushes that already exist in my collection. It’s very rare that I find something so different, like Taj Mahal. =)

And to prove (I hope, anyway) that Taj Mahal is not impossible to wear, here is a FOTD of me wearing it. I apologize for the foundation and the lighting. I’m testing foundation application methods right now and as the sun’s position is moving I’m having a really hard time finding the best place to take pictures near my vanity again.

Face: Murad Acne Concealing Treatment, Shu Uemura Face Architect Smoothing Foundation 754, MAC Pink Rebel Lustre Drops; Eyes: MAC Melon, Museum Bronze, Blonde’s Gold, HIP Chrome Gold, UD Bourbon; Cheeks: NARS Taj Mahal; Lips: Shu Uemura Jupiter Brown;

I thought it turned out really well, no? Taj Mahal transforms into this beautiful apricot flush on my skin (just shy of and a little more yellow than NC30) that really lights up my face. I think paired with my favorite eyeshadow combination of all time (MAC Melon, Museum Bronze & Blonde’s Gold) and the Jupiter Brown lipstick, Taj Mahal gives me a very golden look without making me look tanned at the same time. I can definitely see myself wearing it a LOT this summer. :D

oo i really like taj mahal on you! it makes your cheek glowy yet it’s not tanned like a contour color. I need to check out this shade :) i totally know what you mean about NARS packaging, I love how it feels against my fingers…until i smudge stuff all over it and can’t wipe it off. argh!

You totally do!!! A lot of orange-y corals turn my skin golden (like R&R All-Nighter, and it’s not necessarily a bad thing hehe) but this one doesn’t which I think is really special. :D

& dude, I try sooooo hard to keep my NARS compacts clean but I think it’s a lost cause… ;_; I know some people have depotted them but I don’t have another nice palette to put them in at the moment… =/

  3. *applauds you for finding something super unique to add to your blush museum* it definitely stands out in all those swatches. How do you find the texture of NARS products generally? I swatched one of my friend’s NARS eyeshadows, and while the color was gorgeous, the texture wasn’t particularly great. This EOTD combo seriously looks so good on you, plus I think those MAC Lustre Drops contribute to the allover glow as well. I think Taj Mahal is the perfect blush to go with those eyeshadows too, since it pulls out all the warm tones.

LOL. I’ll do another blush inventory once the last few come in the mail. =)

And you know honestly, I am not a huge fan of NARS blushes. I find them mostly to be dry and quite powdery… like, if you tap at the surface with a brush then little particles start falling off versus the brush just picking up pigment, you know what I mean? The powder is pretty finely milled, but they’re just nowhere near as smooth or creamy or blendable in texture as my favorites (Shu, Rock & Republic, LM). The other thing is that I think the pigmentation of NARS blushes is highly overexaggerated and overrated. I can easily use a fluffier small powder brush with Torrid and Sin like I do my MAC Mineralize or other softer blushes. I think NARS has a range of pigmentation within their blushes and some are crazy pigmented, but at that point it’s just kind of overkill. A couple of my Shu blushes, all my R&Rs and Tarina Tarantino Parasol are REALLY pigmented as well that I could use a skunk brush with them, and no, they’re not *quite* as pigmented as Taj Mahal, but their textures are miiiiiiiles better than NARS. NARS is just much harder to work with and I don’t think that the product actually lasts longer because of the pigmentation. I’m pretty sure I use about the same amount as my other pigmented blushes because it’s just impossible to get an even application on the first try and I spend so much time reapplying and blending!

As far as NARS products in general, I actually haven’t tried any! I’ve heard the lip products go bad really fast because there are no preservatives in them (and this in itself just really squicks me out, preservatives are used for good reasons…) and the eyeshadow texture is really hit or miss depending on the eyeshadow. The cream eyeshadows are almost universally considered to be a failure and I really disliked Laguna even though everyone else loves it to bits. LOL. HTH!

hehe I came up with an analogy today. Cat:blush::S:lippies. I have too many aaah *tears hair out while browsing the internet for more* Thanks for the feedback! I always had this feeling that the line was overhyped in terms of texture and quality. I’m not denying that there’s some nice colors, but people are always raving about Orgasm for example, which I find way too glitterbomb to look natural.

& oh yeaaaaaa. I reallllly disliked orgasm. It has so much frost/pigment it was basically impossible to NOT look like a ridiculous oil slick just to get the color to show up on my cheeks. I think dryer-skinned ladies might have more luck, but for me it was pretty much unwearable. =/

  4. it’s something different. you gotta find a warm lip colour for it as your lips have more pink/red. i love a different cheeck colour like this for a change. i just went to NARS yesterday and was tempted to pick up a different blush but then i thought it was close to my Chanel JC Reflex. (forgot the name of that NARS blush already! LOL)

    Catherine responds:

Yea! It’s hard to find new blushes, no?! & aw, I kinda like the pinkiness. In real life the lip color is warmer, it’s just that it photographs sheer due to the glossiness. I really want to try wearing it with an orange lipstick next, but I have to find an orange lipstick first. I tried wearing it with Chanel Egerie, actually, and it was one of the few colors that Egerie just looked blech with!

    Catherine responds:

Thanks! To be really honest though, NARS blushes are really not my favorite. In my opinion there are many other lines that have similarly pigmented blushes (or even blushes that are a tad less pigmented than NARS) that are just infinitely easier to work with. I’m guessing Taj Mahal will be my last NARS blush unless they come out with something truly stunning that I haven’t seen yet.

& thanks for letting me know! :D

  16. Cynthia says:

At first when I read your post you stated this is a blush because of the vibrant orange color. Normally I would be so scare of vibrant orangy color but with the actual swatch you post up it looks very nice on you. I think to me this is somewhat debatable that it can be use as a bronzer as well.

    Catherine responds:

Taj Mahal is really a lovely golden orange blush. I wouldn’t suggest using it as a bronzer though … I only mentioned that I like it because it gives my complexion a gold tone but doesn’t bronze as well like some other orange blushes do (for example R&R All-Nighter really pulls out the golden undertones in my skin).
