SunGod Festival

Monday, May 17th, 2010

Hi guys, short post with lots of pictures today haha. Here are some pics from the SunGod Festival last Friday. My friends and I ended up not actually spending all that much time at the concert because it was SO COLD out! We left around 7pm and went to Tofu House for dinner before catching Iron Man 2. None of us are really concert or drinking people, so I think it was actually our best SunGod yet LOL.

Me, J & T at my apt.

We met up at my place first to play with makeup and nail polish, as is our pre-concert/dance tradition. T and I actually went out to lunch first, poor J got stuck at work and had to meet us about an hour late.

T‘s probably the least girly of the three of us so J and I always do her makeup. It’s kind of become a tradition by now haha, and I hope she does actually enjoy getting dolled up lol. I don’t have any pictures of nail polish, but T chose China Glaze Ruby Pumps for her fingers and Sinful Daddy’s Girl for her toes. For her eyes, she picked out Fyrinnae Parental Advisory from my collection and I put the rest together.

T, eye & face makeup by me, liner by J.
Eyes: Kat von D Galeano, Rad Purple, Lucifer (Beethoven), Fyrinnae Parental Advisory, HIP Chrome Violet Volt, Urban Decay Zero, Shiseido Perfect Mascara; Cheeks: Hard Candy Living Doll, Laura Mercier Gilded Garden; Lips: Shu Uemura Rouge Unlimited in PK 369;

I chose to do a dramatic purple smoky eye paired with a soft pink cheek and toned down MLBB lips. Can you believe T‘s only wearing that bright shu lipstick sheerly? She has such perfect lips! & of course, I can’t and have never been able to do top liner, so I defer to J who is the queen of winged black liner. She always does such a perfect job! T was so funny, she kept on commenting that her eyes looked so big she was freaked out by them LMAO! :D

J‘s quickly becoming an expert at eyeshadow! I was unfortunately between doing my own makeup and T‘s while she did hers so I didn’t get to see what she used except that she borrowed my Kat von D Beethoven palette.

J did her own makeup.
Eyes: Kat von D Beethoven palette; Lips: clear lip gloss;

She did a really pretty blue smoky eye and kept the rest of the face light and fresh. I totally want to know what blush she used now teeheehee. We sadly didn’t get a chance to do J‘s nails since we were pressed for time (and actually we ended up missing the only part of the concert we really wanted to see…) but hopefully we’ll have another girl’s night in soon. =)

& I did mine.
Eyes: MAC Mutiny, HIP Showy duo teal, Fyrinnae Polar Bear, HIP Chrome Gold, Prestige WP Surf; Cheeks: Shu Uemura Lolly Cherry, Laura Mercier Gilded Garden; Lips: Chanel Egerie;

I opted to go with a bright teal and gold eye with coral pink cheeks and lips, almost exactly like a recent FOTD. It came out a little different though, I think because I didn’t layer 5 blushes LOL.

Anyway, like I alluded to earlier, the only part of the concert we were really interested in seeing was Michelle Branch, but we just barely missed her performance. Unfortunately neither J or I had gotten wristbands for the concert (they ran out at 3pm … wtf???) and so we used SO and his friends’ to get in, but by the time we managed to she was already leaving the stage. So we just kind of milled around for about two hours and watched a couple dance performances before we got too bored and too cold and left for a girls’ night out.

At the festival.

But we have pictures to prove we were there. =) I’m still sorting through Junkyard Derby pictures. That post will probably come later this week. =)

Breakfast w/ Sarah! :D :D :D

Sunday, April 11th, 2010

HI GUYS! OMG today I got to have breakfast with the absolutely charming Sarah of Hello ‘moto & MotoJewelry & her BF! This girl is so cute and all smiles – I had an awesome time hanging out with them. :D (I’m also wearing earrings she made me.)

Sarah & I. :D

Sarah and the BF were down shooting a wedding (they are both amazing photographers!), but they were able to squeeze a little time to have breakfast with me at the little cafe near my apartment. I have to admit, it was the earliest I’ve been up in a few months LOL, but it was so much fun! Sarah is in many ways like the sister I never had and I’m so happy I finally got to meet her in person! :D

Sarah & the BF.

Sarah and her BF are so freaking cute together! We seriously had the most awesome time making jokes and being totally random. I totally can’t wait to hang out more. :D

Thank you so much for a lovely breakfast, Sarah!!!! :D :D :D

Product Focus: Laura Mercier Stickgloss

Wednesday, March 10th, 2010

Hi guys! I’ve been meaning to do this post for a long time, actually, but I kept accumulating stickglosses so I never had a complete picture! LOL! Anyway, today I want to bring you a special review on one of my favorite cosmetics products EVER – the Laura Mercier Stickgloss. As you can see, I have 7, which easily makes the Stickgloss my most purchased/swapped for product in my entire collection.

Laura Mercier Stickglosses in Baked Earth, Peach Sorbet, Poppy, Cranberry, Black Orchid, Sugar Plum, Rosewater

The Stickglosses aren’t necessarily a unique concept – lots of brands have glossy finish lipsticks that are supposed to be like a gloss in a tube. For me, what makes Laura Mercier’s so special is the formula.

First, the texture is just incredible. They have a light balm-like texture that has, in my opinion, the perfect amount of slip. They are very comfortable to wear and are the only lipsticks I have ever found that I don’t have to wear balm under. They are advertised as hydrating and they are the only lipsticks that do actually lightly condition my lips and leave them better off than when I first put them on. (For reference, I have stupidly dry, sensitive lips and I find both the MAC Lustre finish lipsticks and all the Burt’s Bees lip balms to be drying.) Furthermore, the Stickglosses look beautiful. They are incredibly forgiving to deep vertical liplines and dryness, and they never sink, feather or bleed.

Second, the pigmentation is excellent. Unlike other brands, I find the Stickglosses to all be buildable to opaque. While they may not necessarily photograph this way because of the glossiness, they can definitely be full-coverage, even on my pigmented lips. I have struggled finding sheers that show up true to tube in other brands (*coughDIORcough*), but I’ve never been disappointed by a Stickgloss. That being said, they can easily be worn sheer as well. In this regard, I think the Stickglosses are some of the most versatile lip products out there since they wear equally well no matter how you wear it.

Aside from that, lasting power is decent, a good 4-5 hours on me with no eating though some of the darker colors easily last through some light snacking as well. Considering I have very dry lips, and most lip color billed as “long-lasting” causes an entire layer of my lips to flake and peel off within half an hour, I am very happy with the lasting power of the Stickglosses. I also think Laura Mercier has done a phenomenal job formulating colors that are truly easily wearable by a very wide variety of skintones. I don’t feel like I have to work to wear any of the colors I have (which is about half the line and I’m eyeing more!).

Laura Mercier Stickglosses in Baked Earth, Peach Sorbet, Poppy, Cranberry, Black Orchid, Sugar Plum, Rosewater

Here are the swatches – I do apologize the lighting makes the colors run a little yellow. I’ve linked each name to all the FOTDs I’m wearing the color in, so you can see how they actually look. Like I said, they don’t swatch or photograph that well on the arm, but they do build up to opaque on my lips in real life. I personally think most of the Laura Mercier website color descriptions are inaccurate and their color swatches are horrid.

Baked Earth is a warm brown red with very subtle gold shimmer. It’s my favorite to throw on everyday because it’s MLBB for my pigmented lips. Peach Sorbet is probably my new favorite lip color ever – it’s a very bright, satin-finish medium peach-coral that really lights up my face. Poppy is a bright orange-red with silver and red shimmer. Cranberry is a glossy cream that is muted medium berry pink when applied sheerly and builds up to a true neutral red when layered. It’s the only red I have that doesn’t pull pink or orange on me. It also really brings out the natural flush in my cheeks (this is pretty impressive considering it’s basically nonexistant) and doesn’t make me look sallow. Black Orchid is the sheerest Stickgloss I own, and is a medium purply plum-berry cream. It’s what I think Clinique Black Honey should have been (Black Honey is totally a sheer red.). Sugar Plum is probably the most versatile Stickgloss I own. It’s a slightly-warm medium pink cream that pairs really well with practically any combination I have ever tried to pair it with. Rosewater is a high shimmer, satin finish peachy pink, leaning on the pink side.

Unfortunately, Peach Sorbet is discontinued, but I think Tiger Lily is similar.

The Stickglosses are widely available wherever Laura Mercier is sold (Nordstroms, Neiman Marcus, Laura Mericer.com) except for Sephora which only stocks 4 of them (Courtisane, Black Orchid, Brown Sugar and Peony). I adore the Stickglosses. I rarely wear other lipsticks these days (and when I do they’re usually my Tsumori Chisato Rouge Unlimiteds!) because these are so low maintenance and comfortable!
